Micro Piezo™ TFP Print Head Technology Building on the print head technology leadership established by Epson with the solid–state Micro Piezo print head, the Epson Stylus Pro 11880 features the Epson Micro Piezo TFP (Thin Film Piezo) print head. Featuring 9–channel print head technology, the new one–inch wide print head features a massive 360 nozzles per colour (channel), delivering twice the nozzle count of earlier models and therefore able to print at nearly twice the speed. Another advance made with the Micro Piezo TFP print head is an ink–repelling coating, which reduces clogging and in environments where time is a valuable commodity, represents greater revenue opportunities.
Figuring prominently in the Epson Stylus Pro 11880's range of advanced features is the innovative Automatic Ink Droplet Detection System. Using incredibly precise and sensitive electrical charge detection technology, this new feature detects the electrical charge of a single ink droplet that has been fired from the Micro Piezo TFP print head. If the printer's Automatic Ink Droplet Detection System detects insufficient electric charge in the droplet – which signifies a less than required amount of ink was fired – the printer is automatically sent into head cleaning mode. Unless specified by the user, the Stylus Pro 11880's Automatic Ink Droplet Detection System activates each time the printer is turned on and after a predetermined period of time – even if that falls during a print. As a result of this, the printer's reliability is significantly improved, avoiding misprints from unexpected nozzle clogging.  Variable Sized Ink Droplet Technology
By controlling the electric pulse applied to the Piezo element, the Micro Piezo print head is capable of producing several different sizes of ink droplet depending on the image type and media used. This new generation of Micro Piezo print head improves the Variable Sized Droplet function to enable firing of high density Epson UltraChrome™ K3 Ink.
